Pune Geared Up To Host World Junior Chess Championship 2014


Pune is all geared up to host this prestigious and second most important Chess tournament in the World from 5thOctober to 20th October at Hotel Hyatt.

More than 125 players in the open category and over 75 girls from over 45 countries have confirmed participation. A special feature of this edition will be that both the Open and Women's section will boast of players featuring in the top hundred in the World and will include six super Grandmasters (Above ELO 2600) apart from Grandmasters, International Masters. Vladimir Fedoseev (2677) and Alexandra Goryachkina (2430) from Russia are the top seeds in the open and girls category respectively. Vidit Gujrathi ranked sixth and Padmini Rout ranked third in the WJCC 2014 rankings will spearhead the Indian challenge in the Open and Girls category.

Pune: 29th September, 2014.

A glittering Opening ceremony, first time live internet coverage with Commentary and some of the strongest Chess brains promising high voltage action, will be the high points of the World Junior Chess Championship (WJCC) 2014. Pune is all geared up to host this prestigious and second most important Chess tournament in the World from 5thOctober to 20th October at Hotel Hyatt.

More than 125 players in the open category and over 75 girls from over 45 countries have confirmed participation. A special feature of this edition will be that both the Open and Women's section will boast of players featuring in the top hundred in the World and will include six super Grandmasters (Above ELO 2600) apart from Grandmasters, International Masters. The WJCC-2014 is being jointly organized by the Maharashtra Chess Association and Pune district Chess Circle under the auspices of AICF (All India Chess Federation) and FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs-, World Chess Federation). The tournament will be conducted in the Swiss League format comprising 13 rounds with one round being played each day. The inauguration is scheduled on 5th October and the first Round will be played on 6th October.

The winner in both these categories will be conferred the title of Grandmaster (GM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM) respectively and, will automatically qualify for the forthcoming World Cup, which is part of the World Championship Cycle. The winners would also take home a cash prize of Rs 6,00,000 (Six Lakhs). As a special recognition, the best Indian performer in both the sections will be presented with the Pune Mayor's trophy. Apart from the titles, there will be GM, IM, WGM and WIM norms at stake for players performing creditably

Addressing the gathering, Mr Aniruddha Deshpande, Vice President, Maharashtra Chess Association and Chairman, WJCC Organising Committee said, "Maharashtra Chess Association is extremely pleased to host the World Junior Chess Championship in Pune, a city that has produced many Grandmasters in the past. I am overwhelmed by the response for participation that we have received from every part of the world. We have an enterprising team which has been working round the clock to make this tournament a grand success and we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to do so. I am sure that this championship will provide an ideal platform for budding stars to take their game of chess to the next level. We are thankful to the Government of Maharashtra and our sponsors LIC, ONGC, Everstone, Jain Irrigation and Amanora for their valuable contribution which will go a long way in making this tournament a grand success".

The organizing committee of WJCC- 2014 comprises prominent chess players and key personalities of various Chess Associations namely Ashok Jain, Ravindra Dongre, Zone President of World Chess Federation (FIDE) and, Treasurer, AICF and, Chairman of the Maharashtra Chess Association; Siddharth Mayur, Vice President of the Pune District Chess Circle; Niranjan Godbole, Secretary of Pune District Chess Circle; Sanjay Karavade, treasurer of Pune District Chess Circle; Dilip Pagay, Secretary of Maharashtra Chess Association; Chess Grand Master Abhijt Kunte ;Prakash Kunte and Moreshwar Bhagwat.

The tournament will be played at Hotel Hyatt, Next to Aga Khan Palace, Viman Nagar, Pune.
